Legacy Fleet

The legacy fleet refers to the entire BART revenue fleet built between 1970 and 1996. These total 688 cars (fleet size numbers vary depending on year), divided into 6 different and distinct types, have a long and illustrious history, including various rebuildings, modifications, and accidents. This section of the website explains to the user the different types of cars of the legacy fleet.

Maximum Speed: 80 mph (70 mph scheduled)
Station Dwell: 15-20 seconds
Track Voltage: 1000 volts
Average Speed: 50 mph (planned/1972), 33-36 mph (Present)
Track gauge ± 1/8": 5'6"

Note 1: 2 car trains (150 feet in length) ran in revenue service in 1972 due to shortage of B cars.
