Derailment in the Wye (1992)
APTA Report on Derailment of December 17, 1992
Engineering & Operations Committee September 21, 1993 SUMMARY OF ACCIDENT At approximately 11:21 p.m. Thursday, December 17, 1992, a southbound six-car train, traveling in the reverse direction on the Richmond-Fremont Line, derailed while moving through A05 interlocking. The interlocking is located approximately 200 feet south of 12th Street Station. The lead truck of the third car derailed just past the point of switch. This action caused the trailing truck of the second car also to derail. The second and third cars struck a concrete wall causing severe damage to both cars. Fourteen passengers suffered minor injuries. The accident involved a southbound six-car train designated as train 278 consisting of lead car #113 followed by #676, #753, #316, #601 and #336. A/N: Car 676 was written off. Car 753 was repaired. It was a miracle nobody was killed. |

Car Rebuilding (1998-2002)
During the turn of the century, as part of a systemwide rehabilitation program, all remaining 439 Rohr A and B cars were rebuilt into A2 and B2 cars.
This rebuilding included the conversion from DC to AC propulsion, new Auxilary Power Supply Equipment, rebuilt trucks and suspension, new air compressor, new brake system/hydraulic piping, new battery, new doors, 50% new glass, new carpet, ADA improvements, cleaned and repaired car body, and new cabs. Many intercar closure doors, many cab doors, glass, trucks, and of course the carbodies were reused for the fleet. READ MORE ABOUT REBUILDING HERE. |

Adding the Flag after 9/11 (c.2001, 2002)
In the wake of 9/11, every BART car received two copies of the American Flag (MD-440A), mounted next to doors 1 and 8. Given the fleet size of 669 cars, that is a total of 1,338 US Flags. On the Fleet of the Future, the US Flag is mounted below the cab side windows on D cars.
As one New Yorker put it: "These flags were put on all subway cars and buses to define the strength and will of all Americans who came together for the day that changed everything for New York." - Extension_Ad305 Other transit agencies that added the US Flag in the wake of 9/11 include: New York City MTA New Jersey Transit Tri-Rail |
