BART on the Golden Gate Bridge
The Western Railway Museum's Archives presents some very interesting and rare BART documents - the proposed Golden Gate Bridge route for BART.
In the early 1960s, Marin County was part of the BART District. To connect the area with San Francisco, planners envisioned BART running below the auto deck on the Golden Gate Bridge. These are drawings and an illustration of such an idea, dating from 1960. As a footnote, although BART never made it up to the North Bay, in the spirit of advanced transit technology, the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District designed a high speed ferry route (Larkspur to SF). The original boats were designed in that similar spirit of BART cars. You can read more about the Spaulding Class here. |

Just in case the Golden Gate Bridge wasn't radical enough, here is a second bridge route!
Also, there were ideas of BART running on what is now Caltrain back in the 1950s, and a study for BART on the Bay Bridge in the 2000s/2010s. Such is the beloved Bay Area pastime of making BART routes.
