How it's Made: BART Fleet of the Future Cars

BART's Fleet of the Future cars are assembled from foreign and domestic components, the largest of which is the carbody made from Canadian aluminum assembled together in Mexico, and sent up to the US.

Trucking from Mexico to New York (or Califronia, formerly)

From there, cars are trucked to Plattsburgh, NY or Pittsburg, CA for final assembly.

American truckers pick up the cars at Laredo, Texas.

During this step, you can tell if the car was assembled in Pittsburg, CA or New York. Cars going to the Bay Area with wheels and trucks were assembled in New York. Cars without wheels and trucks heading to CA will be assembled in Pittsburg, CA.


Plattsburgh, NY or Pittsburg, CA (formerly)
Final assembly of the car, including installation of undercar equipment (trucks, HVAC system, traction control, etc) occurs in one of two plants. From there, the car is trucked over to BART.

From the looks of it, New York is able to build more cars than California (as of June 2023).
The Pittsburg, CA assembly location closed on September 28, 2023. All remaining FOTF cars are assembled in NY.

Delivery to BART Hayward Test Track
Special trailers carry BART cars across the country (or from Pittsburg) to the Hayward Test Track.

BART Acceptance Testing
At the Hayward Test Track, located next to Hayward Yard, cars are tested in a captive environment.

Additionally, the cars are tested on the mainline before entering revenue service.

Revenue Service
Following testing, they enter revenue service carrying thousands of passengers week to week.
