Train Lengths

In the first months of operation, the shortest trains were two cars in length.

Due to the lower ridership of this line, Orange line trains are generally shorter than their Transbay counterparts. During offpeak times, trains were as short as three cars in length. The September 10, 2015 schedule change resulted in the shortest trains becoming four car trains.

Before Covid (c.2018-3/2020):
Peak: 6 and 8 car trains.
Offpeak: 4 and 6 car trains.

During Covid: 8 car trains, all day.

March 2022: Due to a substation fire along the Richmond line, the Red line was cancelled. The Orange line ran as normal, sometimes picking up the slack with a 10 car train. On March 21, 2022, the Red line resumed service, but due to the power issue, both Red and Orange line trains are 5 cars in length.

As of summer 2022 Orange line trains are back to a scheduled train length of 8 cars, all day.
